LLP & Partnership Tax Returns

The Partnership Tax Return (SA800) is the annual filing that reports a partnership or Limited Liability Partnerships (LLPs) total income, expenses, and profit split to HMRC. The partnership or LLP files the SA800, and each partner or member then reports their share on their own Self Assessment.

What are Partnership / LLP Tax Returns?

Partnerships and LLPs must submit an SA800 every tax year to show HMRC the overall results of the business and how profits or losses are allocated between partners or LLP members. The entity itself does not pay tax. Instead, each individual is taxed on their share through Self Assessment, and all figures must be consistent across both returns.

For traditional partnerships, the process is relatively straightforward. The partnership submits a single SA800 return showing total income and expenses for the year. Each partner then declares their share of profit or loss on their own Self Assessment using the SA104 form. Partnerships are not registered at Companies House, so there are no public accounts to file, but accurate bookkeeping remains essential to support the SA800.

For LLPs, the process is similar but involves additional reporting. LLPs are registered at Companies House, which means they must also file annual accounts and a Confirmation Statement each year just like a limited company. Each LLP member is still taxed personally on their share of profits, but the LLP itself must maintain formal accounts and comply with both Companies House and HMRC deadlines.
